Our Stories
Nancy - Concorida Graduation Concordia University
Freddy Fuentes
I was born on a warm winter night in San Salvador, El Salvador on December 14, 1975 son to Marco and Dilma Fuentes. Not even five years later we moved to the United States in fear of our lives as our country was in civil war. We moved from city to city landing in Houston, Texas were we lived for about five years. Unable to obtain American citizenship we applied for landed immigrant status with Canada and were accepted through a refugee group Jubilee Partners.

We decided to migrate to Vancouver, British Columbia in 1984. Lack of work and financial circumstances caused us to move to Toronto, Ontario in December of 1987. We have been in the GTA ever since.

My high school years were spent at Silverthorn Collegiate Institute (Nil Veretur Veritas-The Truth Fears Nothing), in Etobicoke where my studies focused on technology including electronics, and computer programming. I also excelled in Math and Accounting. However my love for computers prevailed.

After several attempts to gain acceptance to various universities, I applied to Seneca College and was accepted into their electronics engineering technology program. After only one semester I moved to DeVry Institute of Technology under their electronics engineering degree program. Financial circumstances forced me to look for work.

Eventually landing a temporary position Consumers Packaging Inc., where I was helping with a computer rollout in 1999. Consumers was taken over in October 2001 by Owens-Illinois Corp. and I have remained on board as a systems administrator.

I enjoy baseball (go Jays go), volleyball and hockey (go Leafs go). Like Nancy, I am the oldest of three. I have a brother Carlos and a sister Patty, and the family pet dog Peluche.

How Freddy Proposed
It was December 14th my birthday! Nancy and I were putting up the Christmas tree and decorating my parents home. She decided to mop the floor near the entrance and as she was doing that I placed the box with the ring with the other ornaments that I was putting on the tree. Then I said, "Mi amor, I need help with this ornament because I have no idea where to put it." She came up and said, "Oh yea? Which one?". I turned around, picked up the box and said, "This one". She looked a little puzzled so I opened it got down on one knee and said, "Mi amor, te casas con migo?" which is Spanish for, My love, will you marry me?

She started crying and said si si si :)

I have one sister (Cathy) and one brother (David) (who are very lucky since I am the oldest, I broke my parents in for them...lololol) and the family dog (Taz).

I enjoy sports and I love the outdoors. I have a passion and zest for life as well as my faith. I have lived in Toronto all my life except for three years of which I lived in Montreal while attending Concordia. I am hoping to pursue a career in human resources.

I love my family and friends very much as they both have impacted my life in so many ways. My friends you know who you are and I will cherish our friendships always.

I am now Nancy Fuentes! Still the same person just new last name!

How We Met
Our story is actually a little complicated. I met Nancy through her sister (Cathy) during dinner at a Pizza Hut. Nancy and I were actually dating other people but we became very good friends. Our relationships broke down after a few years and I asked her out. She said no for the longest time but after a while, decided to give me a chance. We've been together ever since.

The Wedding
Small wedding (by Portuguese standards), the unique side is that my father is a minister and he performed the ceremony. He always said that he has been praying for my wife since the day I was born, so we thought it would be a great honour for him to marry us in fulfillment of his prayers. The reception was at a beautiful banquet hall in Mississauga and our closest family and friends attended.
